What is the Constitutional Revision Commission?

Why can't we just pass a law to ban greyhound racing?

Greyhound racing has been an issue long debated in the Florida legislature without resolution. This is a Constitutional issue, because the approval for pari-mutuel gambling on dog races is already in the Constitution.

Every 20 years the Constitutional Revision Commission (CRC) is created to address possible changes to the state constitution. The CRC is comprised of 37 commissioners who consider proposals that if passed will be placed on the statewide ballot in November 2018.

WHY IS THIS NECESSARY?

Greyhounds are sweet, gentle dogs and like all dogs deserve to be protected from individuals and industries that would do them harm. Sadly, thousands of greyhounds suffer at commercial racetracks, for an industry that is no longer economically viable. At these tracks greyhounds endure lives of confinement, kept in warehouse-style kennels with rows of stacked cages for up 20-23 hours each day. They are fed 4-D meat from downed or diseased animals deemed unfit for human consumption. Many racing dogs suffer injuries while racing, and according to state records a racing greyhound dies every three days on a Florida track.

An historic Constitutional Amendment has been introduced by Senator Tom Lee that would phase out dog racing in Florida by 2019! Florida has 12 of the remaining 18 tracks in the country and is the primary reason this cruelty continues. This Constitutional Amendment would allow the people of Florida to do what the legislature has failed to do, rid the state of dog racing by 2019 and put an end to this cycle of cruelty.

You can help the dogs who are still suffering in this industry. If you live in Florida, please call or email the CRC Commissioners on the Executive Committee. Together, we can be a strong voice for greyhounds and finally put an end to this inhumane practice.
